zoonoses, here & now

zoonoses   has long been one of my fa­vorite words.

While it makes me think of cute an­i­mal noses, they are ac­tu­al­ly quite ter­ri­fy­ing dis­eases which I am re­mind­ed of once again as the coro­n­avirus spreads.

The virus is be­lieved to have orig­i­nat­ed late last year in the cen­tral Chi­nese city of Wuhan in a mar­ket that was il­le­gal­ly sell­ing wildlife, hav­ing been trans­mit­ted from the an­i­mals to hu­mans.

Too bad it doesn’t just kill the traf­fick­ers, but I stopped be­liev­ing in kar­ma, or what goes around comes around, or that cheaters nev­er pros­per a long time ago.

We be­moan and try to ra­tio­nal­ize and ex­plain away why bad things hap­pen to good peo­ple, and why good things hap­pen to bad peo­ple, but noth­ing oth­er than an in­dif­fer­ent universe(s) re­al­ly ex­plains it, with a dif­fer­ent type of cause and ef­fect than kar­ma.

I re­al­ized in high school that our species is de­stroy­ing the earth’s ecol­o­gy and that we need to be spat out by na­ture like a chok­ing cat needs to rid it­self of a hair­ball.

We, as a species, are un­able or un­will­ing to self-reg­u­late and pre­vent it.

I do curse the wild an­i­mal trade and the cur­rent wave of an­i­mal ex­tinc­tion as an ex­am­ple of our ig­no­rance, avarice and greed.

But per­son­al­ly I am a hap­py and op­ti­mistic per­son in the present mo­ment: Be here now. Zen in­cor­po­rat­ed … LOL … with­out the trap­pings of rein­car­na­tion or kar­ma or re­li­gion.

The uni­verse will con­tin­ue to evolve and homo sapi­ens will dis­ap­pear just like the di­nosaurs did. Sad that we are rush­ing it along though.

And    zoonoses   is a cool word.
