The death of Gord Downie has left a long-tailed cloud over my week, affecting me more than Prince or Bowie’s did. Those two had larger cultural footprints but that’s part of what made their passings easier to take. They both seemed like outsized multimedia apparitions, or as Hedwig described Bowie, “an idiom working in America and Canada.”
Downie wasn’t that. You could still see the seams on his art – by design – and that made it all much more human and you could feel the thumbprints in the lacquer.
At any rate, here’s another great song of which he had dozens.
