I’ve been reading a lot of articles comparing Trump to Hitler, not unlike I saw much of going on with the Bush administration. There was also some talk to a lesser extent about Obama – because each of these Presidents has done a different thing from the fascism playbook, basically. When it turns out that no individual seems to be as terrible as the ones we associate with definite evil, it’s dismissed as some kind of sensationalism.
However, all of this has been consistently moving us in that same direction without actually being undone, policy-wise. Trump doesn’t need his own Reichstag fire to change the rules, because it’s all already in place. America’s face guy is changing, but we’ve had some of the same people in charge of everything else the whole time. It was especially easy to let our rights be signed away when the person in charge seemed like someone we could trust not to take advantage …
Evil is not required to set things into motion now – just someone really brave and oblivious enough to step up and pull the trigger. And it’s okay to let him be the villain who does it, because half the people expect that it’s inevitable and the other half will only decide too late that it wasn’t in their best interest.
I don’t think our President is a bad person – at least in a conventional sense. I think he is incredibly sheltered and mentally ill, and disliked by all the other important rich people in a way that makes him perfect for this position. And that makes it a lot harder to answer, this question of: Who or what do we attack, and by what channels, in order to express our unrest, to change things for the better – or more specifically, to affect who holds seats in some of these positions that regular people don’t get to vote on?
Honestly, I have no idea.
But I hope we can all at least be a little more aware, for whatever that’s even worth.
I like to think things will change organically as the older generation dies or retires. However, I’m starting to think the first generation of people to live forever will actually be boomers, so they can find a way to keep all the jobs and effectively see the world through to its ruin, as saggy 900 year old cyborgs, still demanding to see the manager at Michaels over a $1 charge for a bag.
At least the rest of us will all have already died without healthcare by then.
