glad they let him play

I was buy­ing too many 4 dol­lar sum­mer-weath­er tops at a thrift store to­day.

All the while some­one was play­ing in­tri­cate and high­ly-skilled clas­si­cal pi­ano pieces on a com­plete­ly crap­pyass standup pi­ano.

Still,
the mu­sic was beau­ti­ful,
ro­man­tic,
stir­ring.

I went to see who it was and it was a black man about my age who looked like he was ab­solute­ly starv­ing to death,
clear­ly home­less.

I was struck,
and still am to­day,
by how im­me­di­ate it would be for so many (all of us?) to dis­miss him ut­ter­ly when he had more tal­ent and skill than prob­a­bly every­body there com­bined.

Any­way, thank you, Stranger.

I can still hear your mu­sic in my head and it’s beau­ti­ful.
