As I watch Merrick Garland testifying I listen to him speak to
“racial bias”
not
“racism”
but racial bias.
That knee jerk reaction that we humans have.
Having racial bias does NOT make you a racist. It makes you a normal human.
Understanding my own racial bias has not only opened my eyes about the way I respond to those of different races but also how I respond to ALL people.
I find I also have
“dumb driver” bias –
“Irritating child” bias,
“rude shopper” bias,
“American flag on a pick-up” bias,
“return the damned cart, asshole” bias,
etc.
This means that in that moment of reaction, that moment of judgement, I am using my bias to direct my response and therefore the outcome and my own future.
Our biases, that everyone of us has is HOW we start the day.
We wake up with them we nurture them and we reinforce them with our unconscious thoughts.
When we become aware of our biases we can correct them, we can educate them, we can help them grow and change into acceptance.
That is the very first step in Human,
and not just racial, Equality.
