‘Liberals have this solemn responsibility to empathize and politely disagree with the cultural values of conservative America, but no such presumption of respectful understanding is demanded upon the other side.’ —Mitch Park
But we’re just overreacting right?
A plea to my white friends that don’t get what the big deal is:
42 years. 8 presidents. Never have I seen a president-elect arrive to so many reports of how scared (terrified really) people are about it. Or to be honest, any.
No one can stop you from saying “it won’t be that bad, give him a chance, stop freaking out” but I strongly urge you to listen, really listen to your non-white, non-straight friends right now. This terror is real and it is absolutely founded in promises and action from the incoming administration.
Can you at least do that? I don’t mean the person you work with that voted Clinton. I mean your PoC friends. Gay ones. Trans ones. Muslims. Mexicans. Disabled. The elderly facing Medicare cuts. Survivors of sexual assault. If you don’t have any friends that fit that criteria we can arrange a discussion. Leave comments below.
At risk of sounding self promoting, people need strength and solidarity and I still have room on my Facebook friends list and so do a lot of my friends. We’ve got a great team here and I am happy to grow it or just offer shelter in it.
And
Every single one of you needs to read this too.
I’ve seen too many peace symbols on hateful assholes that don’t think it’s anything but a fashion icon over the years to know that just being nice to each other isn’t a solution here.
