celebrating 93 years of flomm! today

With a fake art move­ment (that’s be­come some­thing else along the way) we need­ed not only a man­i­festo – but also a found­ing date.

To com­plete the sto­ry of FLOMM, I se­lect­ed a found­ing date that is a bit per­son­al.

                       28 JULY 1923

                       – which is my father’s birth­day.

1923 was a huge year for mod­ernism, and it just hap­pens my dad was born (on the kitchen ta­ble in a small house in the coal min­ing town of West Ha­zle­ton, Penn­syl­va­nia) the same month the 1923 BAUHAUS ex­hi­bi­tion was tak­ing place.

To cel­e­brate my dad’s birth­day – as well as this lit­tle FLOMM thing we have go­ing – I’ve de­cid­ed to is­sue a com­mem­o­ra­tive U.S. Postage stamp every year on 28 July.

This year’s edi­tion fea­tures a new DADA-in­spired FLOM­MIST font I’ve been work­ing on (I’ll have MOR de­tails as I fin­ish draw­ing the rest of the let­ters).
