This past week
was the 101st death anniversary
of one of my most favorite artists of all time,
Egon Schiele,
whose legacy of observational line work
I follow in.
He died at 28, but left a huge body of treasured work.
His mentor, Gustav Klimt adored him.
So raw.
So many biters out there, now you’ll recognize them.
Hurts my feelings.
Observational drawing is draftsmanship based on what you see and feel – versus constructive drawing, based on studied
cubes,
cones,
tubes,
etc.
‘Death and the Maiden’ unites two themes that were a lifelong fascination to Egon Schiele; death and eroticism. It shows two figures in an embrace, apparently seen from above, not usual at all for Schiele to use such a strange perspective. They cling to each other in despair; painfully aware of the finality and hopelessness of their love.
