Here’s the thing, Sacra­men­to Bee … you es­sen­tial­ly are say­ing here that a woman who took near­ly half a mil­lion from law en­force­ment she won’t pros­e­cute, used tax­pay­er dol­lars to erect a fence to keep her con­stituents out, and is cur­rent­ly us­ing tax dol­lars to pros­e­cute her op­po­nent dur­ing the race is a bet­ter choice be­cause all that so­cial jus­tice stuff shouldn’t be the pri­ma­ry is­sue here, and that our com­mu­ni­ty can af­ford to wait for her to even­tu­al­ly come around and get on board.

This isn’t you be­ing op­ti­mistic. This is a deep cyn­i­cism cou­pled with a lack of un­der­stand­ing about what is hap­pen­ing in our com­mu­ni­ty right now and a low key as­sump­tion about what ‘our’ com­mu­ni­ty means (We caught your line about Noah be­ing the “right mes­sen­ger”) and who it is that de­serves to be served first and best by our gov­ern­ment of­fi­cials.

We can’t ig­nore Schubert’s tac­tics and deep pock­et­ed sup­port­ers who seem to steer her pros­e­cu­tions far from them­selves. The fact that she does the job of lock­ing ppl up and oc­ca­sion­al­ly im­ple­ment­ing the death penal­ty is not a rea­son to sup­port her. It is lit­er­al­ly the barest bones of her job de­scrip­tion. A job for which she is well paid by us – the com­mu­ni­ty you think should just keep wait­ing for change. Nope. You got this one wrong.

The way that com­mu­ni­ties of col­or are po­liced and pros­e­cut­ed, the end­less po­lice mis­con­duct, the ever harsh­er sen­tences for those who have made mis­takes while also com­mit­ting the crime of be­ing poor, the mis­use of pub­lic funds for the per­son­al com­fort of a woman scared of bbq, these are is­sues we care about. They are not side­line items. They can not wait.

Haven’t we had enough of sec­ond chances for gov­ern­ment of­fi­cials that so deeply dis­ap­point us? By the Sacra­men­to Bee’s log­ic, Don­ald Trump should en­joy his sec­ond term as well. Af­ter all, he showed up and Pres­i­dent-ed too right? Let’s all just be pa­tient.

I’m out of pa­tience with gov­ern­ment of­fi­cials who only sup­port their rich donors. We are bet­ter than this, Sacra­men­to – even if our own news­pa­per doesn’t think so. I’m vot­ing Noah Phillips.
