‘Are video games art? No. Video games aren’t art because they are quite thoroughly something else: Code.’
—Liel Leibovitz, MoMA Has Mistaken Video Games for Art, New Republic
‘So Picasso is not art because it’s oil paint. Right? … In the 1930s, my colleagues that were trying to put together an abstract art show had all of these works stopped by the customs officers that decided they were not art. So it’s happened before. It will happen in the future.’
—Paola Antonelli, Why I brought Pac-Man to MoMA, TED Talk
Art can be anywhere. Despite what New Republic believes, art certainly isn’t just paint on a canvas. Illustration, photography, typography, film, SDFX, animation, written code – all these art forms came into play when developing FLOMM! THE BATTLE For MODeRN 1923.
And I am thrilled this was recognized over the past few months with FLOMM! being part of The College of New Jersey’s historical exhibition: A Palette of Pixels: The Evolving Art of Video Games.
Featured are some of the game world’s heavy hitters (and shooters) from over the years; including the arcade games I formerly pumped quarters in at the pizza place 2 blocks from my elementary school. This stuff ALSO inspired FLOMM!, beyond our large list of moderns (I show an ATARI FORCE comic book in one of my talks; what we grow up with does shape us).
And here’s a bunch of images from the show:

If in Jersey –
