letterman, trump, and the war room

Back in the 1980s

David Letterman had an interview with then mostly-only New York-known Donald Trump.

From what I remember

The Donald (first time I ever saw this guy) was talking about how if he became President he’d fix up this country and run it like a business. And he was the only one who could do it, he’d get rid of government corruption, etc. etc.

Letterman’s typically sarcastic response was he’d help out, but he wants his own office with a map of the earth on the wall. With blinky lights all over it.

And Letterman kept going, kept talking about the map, Trump kept talking about himself.

And I believe they shook hands on it, Trump becomes President, Letterman gets Bond villain lair with giant map.

With blinky lights.

Unfortunately

Unless someone has em on VHS, most of Late Night with David Letterman (1982–93) on NBC is in the vault.

No reruns, mostly cause to re-broadcast a talk show like that, rights have to be secured for musical guests AND guests were paid scale – it’s a whole legal mess.

Which is unfortunate. Letterman on NBC in the 1980s was THE THING to stay up late for. Cause no one knew what he was going to do.

By the time he settled on CBS (1993–2015), he was more stout Johnny Carson than the trubblemaker that made him famous.

Behind

Letterman was his then girlfriend Merrill Markoe – who was the show’s head writer. And it was her humor that made it all work. I remember when she left the show, it felt like something was totally missing. Years later, she was asked if she would ever work on a talk show like this again, and she responded something along the lines of, I already made one asshole famous, why would I want to do it again? (totally paraphrased; but do check out the links in this paragraph ^ I found some cool stuff here)
