lau maia: nü visions vis-a-vis socrates, sottsass, bauhaus, &c.

Maieutics comes from the Ancient Greek μαιευτική (τέχνη + μαῖα) and it means ‘art of the midwife’ (or ‘of the obstetrician’). This is how the Socratic method was denominated, as reported by Plato. The dialectical art is compared by Socrates to a midwife with the idea of a philosopher representing an obstetrician, helping others to deliver the Truth. This method was an exercise of dialogue. Questions and answers prompted the speaker to look for the truth within himself.”

I’ve been a fan of Lisa Anderlini’s LĀU for some time, her ‘less is more’ approach to colour and forms are applied with sophisticated editing, a splash of post-modern and a touch of humor.

As the Bauhaus anniversary kicked in this year, a wonderful collection from LĀU showed up SS19. Called MAIA, the ‘truth’ of the Bauhaus and other inspirations is reinterpreted into to ready-to-wear.

LĀU’s grammar is always entrusting its core on the close relationship that’s between shape-colors-material and in SS19 my aim was to highlight the points of LĀU research,” Lisa said in conversation. “The continuous remind to Bauhaus, the ‘School’ whence all contemporary Design was born, the reference to artistic movements as Memphis style, the strong attempt to reduce everything to the ‘Shape-concept’ through synthesis.”

The MAIA collection is a reflection on the concept of ‘visual icon.’ What and how does a graphic sign become the representation of an ‘idea’ and of an artistic current’s modus operandi? An icon is not arbitrary, but is an image that brings inside a clear and recognizable message that belongs to the culture of the time being.”

Lisa Anderlini is an Italian designer with an eclectic background: A master of science in architecture, the love of screen printing art and comics, her personal interest with the surreal and magic world of math: Experiences related to the quest for shape, material, and synthesis. Her work is based on geometrical patterns tied to how the clothing is cut and worn, “the result of a deep creative process, which turns pure ideas and meanings into garments.”

LĀU is a women’s tops collection started in Italy in 2011.

Follow LĀU on Instagram or Facebook. Website (buy stuff!) can be found here.

LĀU’s THE FORMULA / FW1920 will be be out in July.
