“Sometimes you lose yourself,
then when you find yourself again,
you realize that kid you’ve been runnin’ away from, is your best self.
“Here’s my country music.”
—Chelsea Dawn
FLOMMIST Chelsea Dawn Davis’ new album is streaming all over. And she has a new page on Facebook.
We’ve been collaborating on projects for over 10 years now – when people say I have a ‘different drummer,’ she’s the drummer.
Chelsea’s jump into country landed an album design on my desk.
To start, I used photos she snapped on the road. And went for a vibe based on ‘vintage’ sitcom lettering she ran across:
I remembered this was a variation of the typography from the insanely cool Libbyland dinners I ate as a kid. I used to send them fan mail and they’d send me even insanely cooler shit in the mail.
On my end, I wanted to do a distinct logotype inspired by wat Chicago did on their albums. Something 3D that would read well at smoller streaming sizes.
This video showed up along the way with the type again:
Ever wonder what graphic design was like before Illustrator? #Ai30th pic.twitter.com/TBfOjmaq11

I didn’t want to use the goofy ‘Ch’ as was typical in the 70s (see the first scene). Also I wanted something lighter, the weight of this type always bugged me; so I redrew it, adapting letters from another somewhat related 1970s revival of a 19th century typeface.
All for just the right vibe.
Munkie.
And here’s this week’s FLOMMISCHEN playlist where I mixed Chelsea in amongst some of the greats. Because, frankly, that’s where she really belongs.
Looking forward to Chelsea’s next move: Which may be some sort of tour (don’t have deets yet). But we’ll be posting info as always.
