My fellow LGBTQ brothers and sisters will understand how profound it was, Wednesday, in India, and abroad, to hear and read these words
“I’m illegal no more, I’m in the shadows no more. I’m in the darkness no more.”
—Keshav Suri, gay Indian citizen upon his country’s Supreme Court abolishing the 157 year left-over law from the British Raj of empire and colonialism, 5 September 2018.
These quoted words struck at my heart with a joyful lump in the throat and tears threatening to break the dam.
Agreed, yet I would add our struggles have been mega-generational and we have to be aware that there will be struggles ALWAYS as long as there are bigots in this world of humans.
The laws within some parts of the planet’s human societies have changed for the better, yet many parts still have our LGBTQ brothers and sisters ‘in the dark.’
I just celebrate the moments of gain and awareness. Wednesday was one of our days where it ‘got better.’ Our younger kindred spirits who are immersed in their forms of darkness, possibly considering to snuff out their own light, maybe need these rays of hope and light understanding
“it does get better!”
