waking up from old school america

I’ve just been lucky in that I’ve had a lot of mo­ments of aware­ness that pushed me to do the work to rewire a lot of the shit­ty sex­ist things I’ve picked up over the decades. A lot that I didn’t even know were there.

And I’m still learn­ing more about how misog­y­ny is sub­tle­ty thread­ed into near­ly every­thing all the time.

This end­less elec­tion has been huge­ly in­struc­tive to that end. It’s my hope that since I have a lit­tle bit more band­width and vol­ume than most, this will trans­late into oth­er guys see­ing this stuff too and that’s a chan­nel to pos­i­tive change will hope­ful­ly spread through.

I don’t think a lot of guys *want* to be sex­ist or hold sex­ist views, but one of the in­sid­i­ous things about in­sti­tu­tion­al­ized bias is that it makes up the at­mos­phere around you in a way you don’t think to ques­tion.

Be­fore this elec­tion I would have thought I knew every­thing there was to know about this stuff but holy hell did that turn out to be wrong.

I get that some fe­male pro­gres­sives ar­ent su­per jazzed about Hillary but while she may not be as sexy a rock­star as they want, she has tak­en more hits for the team than any­one I cant think of off the top of my head.

But she’s still go­ing. And still tak­ing hits.
